Inside The Space: A Focus on Functionality.

Elizabeth Tobin

  For this project, we found ourselves in one of Boston's oldest neighborhoods, The North End. Everything from our initial onsite visit to our final install proved to put spacing and placement to the test to keep the historic charm of the home while transitioning the out-dated fixtures into a high-end renovation. With four floors and tight corners, this single family home in the heart of the North End had roughly 400 sq ft. on each floor. Functionality had to be our full focus.

  The obstacle of limited space actually became a guiding light when choosing local vendors who contributed pieces that served this concept perfectly. A few of these space saving areas we installed were the dining room table, made to seat 4-8 people, a built-in entertainment shelving unit built around a clipped corner for extra storage, and an upholstered bench that offered additional seating for entertaining.

  Storage, storage, storage. From open shelving units in the Living Room and Dining Room, to gorgeous wood dressers in the Master Bedroom. It's style yes, but space that makes a project complete from the inside out. Take a stroll through the updated home in the gallery below and be sure to comment with any questions on how to get this look!

Now Introducing, SYD+SAM!

Elizabeth Tobin

 I have to admit it's been a VERY busy few months. The dog days are definitely over and with a whirlwind of two seasons blending themselves together, I'm finding myself in a winter that feels more like spring with so many things to share. Our studio is almost finished and I've given our address a new face. I've always had a special appreciation for stunning boutiques. The small corner shops and colorful markets I've seen across Europe and America inspire my design aesthetic. I've carried them with me in every floor plan and rendering i've created and I'm excited to announce that I've curated one of my own.

 SYD+SAM is a home decor and personal accessory boutique curated from vendors i've followed and loved throughout my experience in the interior design industry. It's the accents and alterations that can make a house a home. SYD+SAM is an independent business that makes that claim and i'm happy to introduce it to you.

 The shops window displays act as a thumbnail of the store and are draped with a geometric yarn installation created by a great friend of mine Christine. With the freedom to separate this business from the firm, I hand picked each vendor for their artisan-ship and stand out products that pay attention to the little things. The shop sure stands on it's own. Full of statement furniture pieces like custom cabinets, local artwork, and hand pinched ceramics, SYD+SAM's doors are finally open after years of it being a dream.

 Come by the shop and see what I've been up to all fall. SYD+SAM is open Tuesday through Sunday.

Artist Spotlight :: Priscilla Hayes

Emily Pinney

To me artwork is SO important in a space. You can use it as a starting point or use it to complete the room. One of my favorite Artists that I love to work with, is someone I also like to consider a good friend Priscilla Hayes. Her paintings are filled with lots of movement, energy and color!

Priscilla has spent a lot of time traveling with her husband and I think inspiration from her travels shows through in each of her piecesAfter a trip to India with her husband, Priscilla created 4 pieces of work that I think show the cultural influence of the people and the landscape of India with the colors and brushstrokes she used. (I love them so much I bought one for myself!)

We used her work in our Cambridgeport project.
